Dear Librarian: In 1938, when my mother was a Jewish girl living in Hamburg, Germany, she got a brand-new poesiealbum. That's poesie + album = poetry album. Think: autograph album. In THE YEAR OF GOODBYES, actual entries from this poesiealbum serve as springboards for the true story of my mother's last year—1938—in Nazi Germany. I find that young readers relate strongly to these entries—the actual handwriting of my mother's friends, tweens from long ago, who suffered persecution and upheaval, but who also laughed and played. I also find that readers recognize in the poesiealbum the precursor of Facebook and other social media.
