Debbie Levy
Dear Librarian:
In 1938, when my mother was a Jewish girl living in Hamburg, Germany, she got a brand-new poesiealbum. That's poesie + album = poetry album. Think: autograph album.
In THE YEAR OF GOODBYES, actual entries from this poesiealbum serve as springboards for the true story of my mother's last year1938in Nazi Germany. I find that young readers relate strongly to these entriesthe actual handwriting of my mother's friends, tweens from long ago, who suffered persecution and upheaval, but who also laughed and played.
I also find that readers recognize in the poesiealbum the precursor of Facebook and other social media. In that spirit, I'm inviting readers to participate in my The Year of Goodbyes Poesiealbum Project. Please click on my "Dear Reader" letter here on KidsBuzz for details.
Of course, the poesiealbum was only the beginning of my research for this book. The bibliography, note on sources, timeline, and other back matter help make my book a valuable resource as well as a deeply personal, and highly relevant, story.
I hope to hear from your readers, and thanks for all your good work.
Best regards,
Debbie Levy
