Dear Reader,THE HEART SPECIALIST is the story of a young woman trying to become a doctor during the late 19th century, when women doctors were virtually unheard of. I did a great deal of research into the history of medicine and the lives of pioneering physicians—but history isn't what drives the book. My deeper interest lies in human desire and how it pushes us to discover who we are.
The main character of the novel eventually realizes her ambition and becomes a renowned expert on cardiac abnormalities. Yet even as she masters this science, her own heart remains a mystery. THE HEART SPECIALIST is about striving; and about the thing we all strive for: love.
