In THE FIRST DAY I wanted to create a character who was committed equally to faith and desire; and to follow the complicated shapes into which his life, and the lives of those around him, would be inevitably pitched. Samuel Orr takes his love for Anna — a woman he should not love — as seriously as his love for God. And his persistence (in both directions... and for all its messiness) creates a space in which questions surely insistent for us all — of authority, desire, abandonment — are made palpably, viscerally alive. I hope you enjoy it.
