Katharine Beutner
Dear Reader,
In Mycenaean Greece, a generation before the Trojan War, humans live together uneasily with the capricious gods who control their fates. But even the gods cannot always predict what humans will do. Alcestis, granddaughter of the sea-god Poseidon, chooses to go to the underworld in her husband's place. Most versions of her myth simply skip to the apparently happy ending, when Alcestis is returned to her husband by Heracles. My novel ALCESTIS tells the part of the story that's never been told: what happened to Alcestis during those three days in the underworld?
