Toni Raiten-D'Antonio, LCSW

Dear Librarian,

UGLY AS SIN is the product of my lifelong effort to understand the impossible beauty standards of our time and to find a way out of the fear – I call it ugliphobia – that has affected me and every other person I have ever known. Inspired, in part, by Naomi's Wolfe's breakthrough book The Beauty Myth, I took the exploration of appearance and its powerful meaning one step further. The last acceptable form of bigotry is directed at those we deem ugly. This bigotry is turned inward, too, so that we come to hate ourselves and "feel ugly." The problem is, according to the standards of the day, we are all ugly at least some of the time.

My book is based on extensive research of biology, history and culture...and a massive internet outreach to hundreds real people, young and old, male and female, all over the world. It includes my personal ugly story and the stories of my psychotherapy clients, as well.

Fortunately, understanding this ugly truth, and where it comes from, starts us on the path to our true selves and a far more rewarding and purposeful life.
