Melissa Sweet
Dear Reader:
When I was little, I was given two beautiful wooden marionettes. I loved the clickety-clack sound the puppets made, but I didn't care as much about making them performI promptly took off their strings in order to figure out what made them move.
Discovering how Tony Sarg, master puppeteer, invented his "upside-down" marionettes led me all over the map from Nantucket to New York City, to the inner workings of Macy's. What I learned surprised and awed me.
I still love taking things apart, and to tell Tony's story, I made toys and puppets out of found objects and simple materials to use in my mixed-media collages.
