Holly Goldberg Sloan
Dear Librarian:
You are the glue that holds us all together. Libraries are where we go to find answers. They hold our culture.
I could make the case that nothing is more important than books for young people. After the age of 13 it is more difficult to learn a language, to ride a bicycle and to learn to swim. This is documented by scientific study.
It is also more difficult after that age to learn to be compassionate, to understand differences, and to embrace change.
My book was written to ask people, young and old, to look at the world through the eyes of those who may not always be heard.
In the library we whisper because the books do the talking.
Thank you for being there.
Sincerely,
Holly Goldberg Sloan

"What sets this novel apart from the average orphan-finds-a-home book is its lack of sentimentality, its truly multicultural cast (Willow describes herself as a "person of color"; Mai and Quang-ha are of mixed Vietnamese, African American, and Mexican ancestry), and its tone. . . . Poignant." The Horn Book (starred review)
