Dear Librarian:
Thank you for your support over the years, especially your allowing me to indulge my obsession: dance. My latest venture was to photograph the book, BEAUTIFUL BALLERINA, by poet Marilyn Nelson. Like most great poetry, the themes of Marilyn's ballerina are multifaceted. How does one capture the layers, ideas, and joyous spirit found in Marilyn's poetry? Answer: very, very conscientiously. To that end, I chose four students from The Dance Theatre of Harlem, ages three to seventeen, to represent various qualities found in the poem. My mission was to "choreograph" the poem in a way that would be true to the language and capture Arthur Mitchell's distinct ballet company. I hope the marriage of poetry and photography is as pleasurable for you to read as it was for me to create.

Shall we dance?
