Cousins Holly and Ivy have always been best friends, but during the summer of 1965, with the Vietnam War and the Civil Rights Movement causing tensions within the family, the girls are also fighting.

When the girls discover letters relating to a Japanese boy, Kiyo, a friend of their Uncle Jesse's at the time that Pearl Harbor was bombed, they end up learning important truths about themselves and are able to help the family heal from old misunderstandings.
