Dear Librarians,

Authors know that picture books have to be entertaining. I love that part of my job. But I also like to take advantage of speaking to children about issues they encounter. I believe that librarians, parents, and teachers will find this book a useful way to discuss understanding a child who expresses a strong need to assert him/herself and to negotiate their behavior without being suppressive. The Thinking Corner invites reflection but isn't overtly punishing. Priscilla's adults understand that she's capable of being true to herself and becoming a good member of society. This message is all the stronger when she discovers it on her own.

I like to see children being socialized without robbing them of their spirit.

Priscilla's the kind of child who might grow up to be a leader — unless she's quashed. Then we'll have another sad soul who lacks spine, courage and discrimination.

"And Priscilla, with her outsize confidence and (eventual) willingness to see a different perspective, is the perfect heroine for our times." —Publishers Weekly, starred review!

"In a funny, empathic, and refreshingly unsentimental take on childhood, the team behind Miss Brooks Loves Books (And I Don't) and other titles introduces Priscilla, a gorilla-obsessed first grader. Bottner's tale of ape adoration is sweetly spot-on. Primary schoolchildren will identify with Priscilla, her obsession, and her multiracial classmates." —Kirkus Reviews, starred review!

"An exceptional pairing of language and art. Its humor and fresh message give it wide appeal. A standout selection." —School Library Journal, starred review!
