I'm a white Southerner, and my antebellum history isn't really history. It has a presence in the news every day. My history is one reason I wrote a novel about a slave girl named Kedzie. Kedzie's days are spent in torrid cotton fields. She makes the mistake of thinking her life is taking a turn for the better when she's placed in the big house.
