The novel traces a single 17th-century Dutch painting across three centuries and three continents. We follow the first woman to be admitted to a Guild of St. Luke in 1630s Holland, the wealthy lawyer who inherits the painting in 20th-century New York, and the celebrated art scholar of the 21st century who painted a forgery of the landscape as a struggling graduate student.
