Long before I was a novelist, columnist, podcaster or education reformer, I was a public school kid in Flushing Queens. It was the 1970s. Unlike my parents, the children of immigrants, we felt completely secure as Jews and as Americans. But then things got complicated.

Adam Miller is a 12-year-old boy with a sharp sense of humor who hopes to survive until his bar mitzvah. From the moment he's mugged on the subway home from Yankee Stadium Adam faces gangs, anti-Semitism, ostracism, and practical jokes that go too far.
