In THE PROMISED WORLD, there are actually two sets of siblings: the twins Lila and Billy, whose secret past is the main mystery of the novel, and William and Pearl, Billy's children, who are at risk in the present time of the book. The novel has been called "suspense" because of the mysteries in the plot; still, it's primarily a book about family, about the redemptive power of love and the terrible pain caused by love's absence.
