Kelli Stanley

Dear Librarian,

Dear Librarians,

As an author who has used history as a backdrop for her work, I rely on libraries and the kindness and help of librarians in researching my fiction. And certainly my Master's Degree in Classics would have been an impossible goal without the resources at my university library!

For my debut novel, the award-winning historical mystery NOX DORMIENDA, I was privileged to participate in many library panels and a black-tie gala fundraiser for the Sacramento Library Foundation. I hope to expand that participation in the library community for CITY OF DRAGONS.

CITY OF DRAGONS takes place in the San Francisco of 1940 ... where, in Chinatown, fireworks explode as the city celebrates Chinese New Year with a three day-and-night fundraiser for Sino-Japanese war relief. Miranda Corbie-thirty-three-year-old private investigator, Spanish Civil War nurse and ex-escort, waits impatiently in the crowd. Until small-time numbers runner Eddie Takahashi stumbles into Sacramento Street and into her life ... fatally shot.

The authorities hush up Eddie's murder-he was in the wrong place at the wrong time. But Miranda wants justice for the boy ... whatever it costs. From tenements in Chinatown to a high-class bordello draped in Southern Gothic, she shakes down the city—her city—seeking the truth.

CITY OF DRAGONS is the first in a new series, and I'm very honored that it has garnered praise from Lee Child ("Beautifully imagined and beautifully written-this book does everything great fiction is supposed to") and authors including Linda Fairstein, Robert B. Parker, George Pelecanos, Otto Penzler, Tasha Alexander, Cornelia Read, Louise Ure, and Michael Koryta. I was also honored to have it featured in the Library Journal mystery preview article, "The Great Escape" (www.libraryjournal.com/article/CA6650293.html).

Visit my website, www.kellistanley.com, for excerpts, reviews, a readers' guide, an interactive map, videos showcasing the locations, audio podcasts, and more. If you sign up for my newsletter at www.kellistanley.com/newsletter, you can win a CITY OF DRAGONS basket, complete with a copy of the novel, signed and stamped with a special chop or jade stick, a silk scarf, a ceramic tea mug, and a jade dragon, as well as access to special features on the site. Four runners up will receive signed copies of the book.

I love to speak to library reading groups and hear from librarians, so please email me at kelli@kellistanley.com. Thanks for considering CITY OF DRAGONS for your library, and for all that you do to help readers, writers and literacy!

All the best,
Kelli
