Vanessa Kelly

Dear Librarian,

One challenge of writing a Regency-set historical romance is to build a world that is both familiar to readers and yet presents new facets of this glittering and fascinating era. My upcoming release, SEX AND THE SINGLE EARL, is set in Bath—the spa town so beloved by Jane Austen and Georgette Heyer devotees. Readers are drawn to Bath's classical elegance and beauty, but when I began my research I discovered it also had an extensive criminal underclass, complete with thieves, flash houses, and brothels.

This Regency underworld figures prominently in my story as my aristocratic hero and heroine race to save two vulnerable children from a terrible fate, all the while struggling with that most dangerous of passions—love.

I had a marvelous time researching this lesser known side of Bath.
